ABSTRACT

Objective: To report the perioperative management and robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery results of one case with malignant tumor of anal canal combined with severe abdominal distention. Methods: A 66-year-old male suffer from adenocarcinoma of anal canal (T3N0M0) with megacolon, megabladder and scoliosis. The extreme distention of the colon and bladder result in severe abdominal distention. The left diaphragm moved up markedly and the heart was moved to the right side of the thoracic cavity. Moreover, there was also anal stenosis with incomplete intestinal obstruction. Preoperative preparation: fluid diet, intravenous nutrition and repeated enema to void feces and gas in the large intestine 1 week before operation. Foley catheter was placed three days before surgery and irrigated with saline. After relief of abdominal distention, robotic-assisted abdominoperineal resection+ subtotal colectomy+colostomy was performed. Results: Water intake within 6 hours post-operatively; ambulance on Day 1; anal passage of gas on Day 2; semi-fluid diet on Day 3; safely discharged on Day 6. Conclusion: Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery is safe and feasible for patients with malignant tumor of anal canal combined with severe abdominal distention after appropriate and effective preoperative preparation to relieve abdominal distention.

ABSTRACT

Since its emergence in December 2019, corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted several countries, affecting more than 90 thousand patients and making it a global public threat. The routes of transmission are direct contact, and droplet and possible aerosol transmissions. Due to the unique nature of dentistry, most dental procedures generate significant amounts of droplets and aerosols, posing potential risks of infection transmission. Understanding the significance of aerosol transmission and its implications in dentistry can facilitate the identification and correction of negligence in daily dental practice. In addition to the standard precautions, some special precautions that should be implemented during an outbreak have been raised in this review.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze adverse pregnancy outcomes among women with high risk and low risk during prenatal screening. Methods Clinical data of 180006 pregnancies in 5 prenatal screening center in Hangzhou were collected. We compared the adverse pregnancy outcomes of high and low risk pregnancies. Results Among 180006 pregnancies (age<35 years old), there were 10296 high-risk cases and 169710 low-risk cases, with 168654 cases followed. There were 9406 high-risk cases of Down's syndrome (DS) (5.23%), 273 high-risk cases of Edwards' syndrome (ES) (0.15%) and 617 high-risk cases of open neural tube defect (ONTD) (0.34%) . The detection rate of pregnancy outcome of premature birth, spontaneous abortion, termination of pregnancy, stillbirth in the high risk was 5.46%, 0.80%, 1.80%, 0.37%, respectively, and that rate in low risk results was 3.50%, 0.21%, 0.38%, 0.18%, respectively. Adverse pregnancy outcomes in high-risk group were significantly higher than that in low-risk group (all P<0.001) . The actual incidence rate of DS, ES or ONTD in high-risk group (4.56‰, 1.65‰, 0.97‰, respectively) were significantly higher than that in low-risk group (0.12‰, 0.04‰, 0.09‰, respectively, all P<0.001) . The detection rates of prenatal screening were 70.15%, 68.00% and 38.46%, and false positive rates were 5.23% , 0.14% and 0.34% . Conclusion High risk of serum prenatal screening analysis is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. The number of pregnancies experienced invasive prenatal diagnosis can be reduced by routine serum prenatal screening. That is an Effective method to reduce the birth defects.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To develop a new color matching method in dentistry by application of digital photography.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Digital photographs were obtained of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide and natural teeth under the same condition, the L*a*b* values of each digital photography were assessed and analyzed by Photoshop CS4.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide was divided into 5 groups, the L* values were similar in each group, but decreased from group 1 to 5. The a* values of L1.5 and L2.5 were minimum, R1.5 and R2.5 were maximum and M1-M3 were intermediate. Compared with Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, the L*a*b* values of natural teeth were higher.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Digital photography can basically reflect the color of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, and provides a reference for color matching in dentistry.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effect of pH value and fluoride ions on the corrosion resistance of pure Ti and Ni-Cr-Ti alloy in the artificial saliva.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Electrochemical technique was used to measure the electric potential of corrosion (Ecorr), current density of corrosion (Icorr) and polarization resistance (Rp) of pure titanium and Ti-Ni-Cr alloy in the artificial saliva with different pH value and fluoride concentrations. After electrochemical analysis, microstructure and phase diffraction were examined by FSEM.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>With the lower pH value, the Ecorr and Icorr of pure titanium and Ti-Ni-Cr alloy increased, the Rp decreased, there was a significant difference (P<0.05). The Ecorr and Icorr increased markedly, the Rp significantly reduced in the artificial saliva containing 0.2% NaF (P<0.01). FSEM showed that pure titanium and Ti-Ni-Cr alloy surface corrosion, pure titanium in the artificial saliva containing 0.2% NaF was most serious.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Lower pH value decreases the corrosion resistance of pure titanium and Ti-Ni-Cr alloy and the artificial saliva containing fluoride ions decreases the corrosion resistance of pure titanium.</p>

ABSTRACT

For preparing fluorinated quinolone antibiotic medicine locally used in stomatology, simultaneous determination of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enoxacin was carried out by multiphase ion chromatography with fluorescence detection. Quinolone antibiotics were separated by Dionex OmniPac PAX-500 column with an eluent of 15 mmol/L H(2)SO(4) and 35% methanol (v/v) at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml/min and detected with fluorescence with excitation and emission wave lengths of 347 nm and 420 nm respectively. The detection limits (S/N=3) of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin were 50, 105 and 80 ng/ml respectively. The relative standard deviations of retention time, peak area and peak height were less than 1.1% and good linear relationship resulted. The developed method was applied to pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of strengthening Pi and activating blood circulation therapy (SPAB) on serum levels of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Seventy RA patients were randomly assigned to 3 groups. The 30 in the Chinese medicine (CM) group were treated with SPAB; the 20 in the Western medicine (WM) group were treated with indomethacin and methopterin; and the 20 in the CM-WM group were treated with the combination of the therapy in the above two groups, and the course of treatment was 3 months for all. Serum levels of ACTH and VEGF were determined before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate in the CM group was 80.0%, WM group 85.0% and CM-WM group 95.0%, the last one showed the best efficacy (P<0.05). Serum level of ACTH increased and level of VEGF decreased after treatment in all groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but the increment/decrement in the CM-WM group was higher than that in the other two groups (P<0.01), while comparison between that in the CW group and WM group showed insignificant difference.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>SPAB therapy has the effect in alleviating the condition of RA, similar to that of Western medicine, it can increase the serum level of ACTH and decrease the serum level of VEGF remarkably in RA patients.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>There are no detailed reports of three-dimensional measurement of abutment teeth in mastication, because it is knotty to observe the rotation in chewing directly, and inexact to estimate indirectly. This work studies the three-dimensional stability of rigidly fixed bridge under the stresses of distributed loads and concentrated loads by optical method that gives the tip angle and rotation angle calculated directly based on measurement data.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The specimen, taken from a 25-year-old male, was a left mandible without the second premolars and the first molars. As abutments, first premolar and second molar have complete periodontium. The specimen was soaked in formaldehyde solution. The bridge was fixed between two abutment teeth (first premolars and second molars), and the mandible was cemented in a steel box. The load was increased from 0 kg to 23 kg. Laser holographic technique was used to measure the three-dimensional bit shift of the dens, both buccolingual bit shift and mesiodistal bit shift, and determine tip angle and rotation angle.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The effects of stress distribution on the rigidly fixed bridge were evaluated, and stabilization of the bridge under the stresses of distributed loads and concentrated loads, respectively, were analyzed. The results showed that the tips of two abutments were very similar, and no distinct difference was observed between the distributed load and the concentrated load. However, the maximum rotation angle for the distributed load was two to four times as large as that for the concentrated load. In the experiment, the tip angle of the abutment teeth was no more than 0.65 degree, and the rotation angle was no more than 0.60 degree. All maximum angles occurred in the second molar.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The fixed bridge is considered to be safe. In addition, a method for measuring the rotation angle was provided effectively.</p>

ABSTRACT

Simple, reliable and sensitive analytical methods to determine anticariogenic agents, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners contained in commercial gargles are necessary for evaluating their effectiveness, safety, and quality. An ion chromatography (IC) method has been described to analyze simultaneously eight anions including fluoride, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, monofluorophosphate, glycerophosphate (anticariogenic agents), sorbate (a preservative), and saccharin (an artificial sweetener) in gargles. In this IC system, we applied a mobile phased gradient elution with KOH, separation by IonPac AS18 columns, and suppressed conductivity detection. Optimized analytical conditions were further evaluated for accuracy. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the inter-day's retention time and peak area of all species were less than 0.938% and 8.731%, respectively, while RSDs of 5-day retention time and peak area were less than 1.265% and 8.934%, respectively. The correlation coefficients for targeted analytes ranged from 0.999 7 to 1.000 0. The spiked recoveries for the anions were 90% approximately 102.5%. We concluded that the method can be applied for comprehensive evaluation of commercial gargles.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the rotation of abutment teeth of fixed partial denture in chewing and to analyze the effect of rotation on the stability of abutment teeth.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Left mandible (without the second premolar and the first molar) was used for specimen. Holograph-speckle interferometry was employed for measuring the rotation angle.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The maximal rotation angle was no more than 0.6 degrees and change of the angle was obviously in nonlinearity, when load increased from 9.8 N to 225.4 N.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The laser holograph-speckle interferometry could be used to measure rotation of abutment teeth. The intricate surface contacting was the main reason for rotation and this rotation had no bad effect on abutment teeth of fixed partial denture in daily use.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To address the neural basis of Chinese idioms processing with different kinds of stimuli using an event-related fMRI design.Methods Sixteen native Chinese speakers were asked to perform a semantic decision task during fMRI scanning.Three kinds of stimuli were used: Real idioms (Real-idiom condition);Literally plausible phrases (Pseudo-idiom condition,the last character of a real idiom was replaced by a character with similar meaning);Literally implausible strings (Non-idiom condition,the last character of a real idiom was replaced by a character with unrelated meaning).Reaction time and correct rate were recorded at the same time.Results The error rate was 2.6%,5.2% and 0.9% (F = 3.51,P0.05 )for real idioms,pseudo-idioms and wrong idioms, respectively.Similar neural network was activated in all of the three conditions.However,the right hippocampus was only activated in the real idiom condition,and significant activations were found in anterior portion of left inferior frontal gyrus (BA47)in real-and pseudo-idiom conditions,but not in non-idiom condition.Conclusion The right hippocampus plays a specific role in the particular wording of the Chinese idioms.And the left anterior inferior frontal gyms (BA47)may be engaged in the semantic processing of Chinese idioms.The results support the notion that there were specific neural bases for Chinese idioms processing.
